ASUS Eee PC 1008HA Seashell 10.1-Inch Pearl White Netbook - 6 Hour Battery Life
Customer Rating (4.0/5)
the 1008HA stands out bc of the thin cosmetics and portability asset bearing more or less on elegance factor. Having a XP operating system w/ the default Ram provided would suffice for most to browse and work basic editing tasks. For Windows 7, the inclination to get 2G memory upgrade increases drastically, and this, for many netbook fans, would lead to an unexplored hardship. I have gone through my own experiences including searching for support sites, forums and graphical blogs that helped me open the plastiky enclosure and risking a lot by touching the internals of this thin-skin baby. I managed to get away w/ this upgrade process more than 4 times but believe me it is sweaty every time. the key is to have a pictural hands-on (via online links or youtube) of what you gonna touch (position of screws, especially connectors - 5 in all to take out), and a set of tools (long nose pliers, exacto knives, mini-small screw drv, and a credit card). The motherboard flipping at the end would NOT require you to disconnect the colored (power) cable, yet to disengage this motherboard from the L hand corner (DC inlet) would require patience (e.g. twig slightly on the ensemble battery/motherb to try to dislodge the tangled corner, w/ help of a non-metallic scribe to push the board away frm the DC port). Always remember that power is still on the PC board and metallic screws or tool touching exposed circuitry means “sudden death” to your property. the Motherboard (still connected to the battery) once flipped on its back will help you work on the sodimm. All the connectors to be removed are described online, and the one not requiring disconnection would be, IMO, the multicolor (rainbow) cable joining the MB and the huge battery. The 2 sprockets supporting the 2 screws( Female end) for the top bezel –at the LCD end– to be re-attached or removed are delicate, and when using the credit card to slowly pry out the top bezel, watch out for not damaging them sprockets (under the top bezel). Every other connector can be easily removed using a exacto; e.g. working on the L/R sides of each cable end. Do not touch metal w/ electronics. Use nose pliers to hold screws when applying your screw drivers; e.g. a tumbling screw onto a exposed electrical part can zap your beloved machine. Use patience w/ prying out (1)the keyboard (there are 2-3 double-sided tapes under its surface; i.e. poke this underside w/ your fingers) and (2) the top very thin skin bezel (use credit card). Good luck!! It can be done & you will feel so proud of yourself. I forgot to mention that at the point where the MB(+ the still attached battery) is ready to be yanked out and flipped on its back (along w/ the battery in one same move), you should note that the blk tape connector cable in the middle of the MB top side (L adjacent to the orange bus ribbon/flat cable) should be untouched; and after you’re done w/ replacing teh RAM, this black/center cable has to remain attached (bc if this middle cable is detached frm its socket, the screen will be dead dark when you power the 1008Ha back up). When you power up the unit, make sure to press F2 early to get to the BIOS page: that way the Ram upgrade will be recognized after you ESC back to its normal Windows startup. Try to remember how cable/connectors are tugged prior to your disconnecting them. YOu will have to tug them back in later since that would be the one way to make the laptop operable in a so thin a frame, not tangled by excess jumbled cables or harness that sticks out to be traumatized
